Plans are moving ahead for an artists village near downtown.
Since 2015, a group of art enthusiasts has advocated for the village, which would encourage artists to operate studios and galleries out of their homes, alongside small businesses and in cafes.
The city comprehensive plan was updated last year to allow a mixed-use zoning for the neighborhood. The city is nearing completion of proposed new zoning laws and standards dictating building styles and use within the Cultural Arts Village in the Edgewood neighborhood, south of State Road 60 between 14th and 20th avenues.
“Everybody’s been waiting for this,” Planning Director Jason Jeffries told the City Council Thursday. “I understand it’s been quite a long process. I think it’s very exciting that the neighborhood has maintained the support of this through all the bureaucratic steps you have to go through with government to implement something like this.”
